Wow Mobile And Wifi

Author: Gary Benton

In the late 1990’s Dr. Nefi was anxious to get high speed Internet access at home (this is a true story, but the name has been changed). Dr. Nefi lived across the street from the university where he taught Electrical Engineering. He liked the high speed access at work, but the modem at home was very slow. He and a fellow professor began to develop a radio link using 10 GHz radio transceivers.

Wireless Internet was very expensive at the time, and their system used cheap hardware. Halfway through the project however, 802.11b wireless networking, now known as WiFi, hit the market, and not long afterwards, the university put up a WiFi access point. After waiting a few months for prices to come down, Dr. Nefi and I purchased antennas, cables, and wireless cards, and were soon surfing the web at high speed, thanks to our University’s Internet connection.

In the last decade, WiFi has become very popular, and is now available at Starbucks, McDonalds, and many hotels and airports. People can be seen with laptops at restaurants and coffee shops, surfing the web. While travelers wait at airports, they pull out their laptops, and hope to find a free hotspot so they can check their email or watch an online video.

In recent months, smartphones running the Google Android operating system have become popular, and will soon outsell Apple’s iPhone. These “Google Phones” have built in WiFi, enabling users to surf the web at high speed whenever a WiFi hotspot is near. When a hotspot is not nearby, users can surf the web using high speed Internet from cell phone towers.

Now an innovative new company has taken advantage exciting possibilities based on the combination of these two technologies. Wow Mobile is a division of Liberty International, a leader in VOIP technology, a unique product that provides telephone service through the Internet. Wow Mobile offers low cost cellular phone plans, featuring unlimited talk, text, and Internet for a flat rate. One can purchase smartphones and service through Wow Mobile, or purchase a phone from another source and use one of Wow Mobile’s plans. In either case, users can get unlimited high speed Internet from cell towers to their smartphone using G3 technology. The combination of G3 and WiFi really starts making things happen.

Smartphones can get a high speed G3 Internet connection through the cell phone towers, and make the Internet available through WiFi. In other words, the smartphone becomes a WiFi hotspot nearly anywhere. If your hotel doesn’t offer WiFi, that’s not a problem. If you are at the airport, and the only WiFi hotspots cost money to use, no problem. You can even save at home by replacing your DSL or cable Internet with WiFi from your cell phone. How much could you save by getting rid of that bill?

Best of all, there’s no limit with Wow Mobile’s plans. I know from experience that after watching a few YouTube videos on my laptop, it’s easy to go over the data limits that the major carriers impose. Then the extra charges really start piling on. If you’d like to have a WiFi hotspot that you can carry in your pocket, check out Wow Mobile. Wow Mobile and WiFi are a great combination.

This looks like a great new service. Wish I’d had it when I was traveling every week.

Just keep in mind that it you want to purchase your mobile phone separately but want the Wow service, you need to by what is called an “unlocked” mobile phone.

If Wow offers smartphones than they are GPS enabled, but you might have to buy your mapping elsewhere.

Many thanks for writing about this. There is a mass associated with important tech information on the actual internet. You plenty of that info here on your own website. I’m amazed – I try to keep a couple sites pretty on-going, but it’s challenging occasionally. You’ve done the strong work along this one. How do a person this?
