You may have heard lately about Google Phones or Android Phones. What are they, and why are people getting excited about them?

Cell phones used to be just for talking. Now many of them have cameras built in, MP3 players, and personal organizers. Apple capitalized on this by launching the iPhone, a cell phone + camera + the kitchen sink. Now Google has come up with a system they hope will be an “iPhone killer”. Just like PCs have operating systems such as DOS, Windows or Linux, cell phones also have operating systems. “Android” is Google’s cell phone operating system, and it is powerful.

Not only can users talk on a Google Android phone, but they can take pictures, use the built-in GPS to navigate, surf the web, and use Facebook to update their status or post pictures directly from the phone. Programmers have written thousands of applications for Google Android phones, many of them free, providing powerful added features, such as live streaming video from the phone’s camera to the web, restaurant and hotel reviews which use the GPS to find the nearest ones, instant messaging, and exciting games.

Apple’s iPhone still has the majority of the cell phone market, but Google Android phones are rapidly gaining market share. Several cell phone makers are producing Android phones, so competition among these companies should keep prices down, enabling the consumer to the the best bang for the buck.

Cell phone service that includes unlimited talking, texting, and internet service for these new phones usually costs from $100 to $200 per month. A new option is now available through Wow Mobile, a new branch of a 10-year old debt-free company, Liberty International. For a low flat fee, users get unlimited talking, texting, and internet with the added bonus of wireless tethering to multiple computers. At best, other plans provide internet access to one computer through the cell phone. With Wow Mobile and a Google Android phone, the phone becomes a WiFi hotspot. Wherever you go, you can surf the web on a laptop with wireless internet access provided by the phone.

Google Android phones are poised to flood the market, with multiple thousands shipping each day. Based on current trends, Android phone sales could overtake iPhone sales in mid 2010. And it’s no wonder, considering the amazing power of these new smartphones.
